M6 MacBook Pro and iMac in India: What to Buy

Two familiar Macs, one new chip, and a very Indian question

On 27 October 2026, Apple did something that looked, at first glance, unremarkable. It updated two familiar Macs: the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the 24-inch iMac. Neither got a new design. Neither got a new screen size. The iMac still comes in seven colours. The MacBook Pro still looks like a MacBook Pro.

What changed is inside, and it matters more than the familiar outside suggests. Both machines now run Apple's M6 chip, the company's first 2-nanometre processor, with more CPU and GPU cores, a doubled Neural Engine, and faster on-device AI performance. In India, where Apple pricing is always a story in itself, the starting prices are Rs 2,39,900 for the MacBook Pro and Rs 1,74,900 for the iMac, with pre-orders from 28 October and availability from 6 November.

This article is not a repeat of TechOrCoffee's earlier "MacBook Pro After Oct 28" piece, which weighed M6, M5 Pro, and OLED against each other. This is an India buyer guide: what you actually get, what M6 changes compared with M5, what the iMac offers that the laptop does not, and who should buy, wait, or skip.

The M6 chip, explained without the jargon

The M6 is Apple's first chip built on a 2-nanometre manufacturing process, moving from the M5's third-generation 3-nanometre process. Smaller transistors generally mean more efficiency and more performance in the same space, though the real-world benefit depends on how Apple uses that headroom.

In terms of cores, the M6 has a 12-core CPU, made up of two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores, compared with the M5's 10-core CPU. It also has a 12-core GPU, compared with 10 cores on the M5, with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core. Memory bandwidth rises to up to 170GB/s on higher-tier configurations, from 153GB/s on the M5, though that higher figure applies to the 24GB and 32GB configurations, not necessarily to every model.

The biggest change for AI work is the Neural Engine. The M6 introduces a dual 16-core Neural Engine, with 32 cores in total, compared with a single 16-core engine on the M5. Apple says this gives up to 1.9 times faster Neural Engine performance, and up to 25 percent faster on-device AI workloads, compared with M5. It also says graphics are up to 30 percent faster, and multithreaded CPU performance is up to 20 percent faster, with some coverage citing up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded performance. All of those figures are Apple's own claims from its testing, not independent test results, and they should be read as such. They are useful for understanding what Apple thinks M6 improves, but they are not a guarantee of what you will see in your own work.

The 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro in detail

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro keeps the design, display, and port layout of its predecessor, with the chip as the main change. It has a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, with up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness, and an optional nano-texture finish. In India, that nano-texture option is listed at an additional Rs 18,000, according to CSR Journal's pricing breakdown. The display is a mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR panel, not the tandem OLED PROLED XDR panel on the touchscreen models. That distinction is crucial, and confusing the two is the easiest mistake a buyer can make this month.

The base configuration in India starts at Rs 2,39,900, with 16GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage, according to multiple Indian reports. Education pricing starts at Rs 2,27,900 for eligible students and educators. Memory configurations go up to 32GB, and storage goes up to 4TB, according to detailed coverage, though prices for higher configurations should be checked on Apple's India store, as they vary by configuration.

Battery life is one of the headline claims, and it needs careful reading. Apple rates the M6 MacBook Pro at up to 24 hours of video streaming, or 16 hours of wireless web browsing, according to Macworld's guide. That matches the M5 model's rated battery life, so M6 does not extend the headline figure, even though the chip is more efficient. Apple also says fast charging can reach about 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 96-watt or higher USB Power Delivery adapter. In the US, a 70W adapter ships in the box, according to Macworld, while in the UK and Europe, the adapter is an extra expense, as it was for the M5 model. Indian buyers should check what is included in the box for their configuration, rather than assuming the US bundle applies.

Connectivity is upgraded through Apple's N1 networking chip, adding Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, replacing Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 on the M5 model. The laptop can drive two external 4K displays at up to 165Hz, up from 144Hz on the previous model, according to Silicon Report. Ports include three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, a MagSafe 3 charging port, and a headphone jack. The laptop is available in Silver and Space Black, and it weighs about 3.4 pounds, or about 1.54 kilograms, according to detailed coverage, though buyers should check Apple's official dimensions for their exact configuration.

The 24-inch M6 iMac in detail

The updated 24-inch iMac is, in many ways, the quieter of the two announcements, but it may be the more interesting one for families, studios, and small offices. It keeps its slim, colourful design, with seven colours: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange, and silver. It keeps its 24-inch 4.5K Retina display, which is bright, sharp, and well suited to everyday work, photo viewing, and video watching.

What changes is the chip and the connectivity. The iMac moves from M4 to M6, with configurations offering up to a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU. The base configuration in India starts at Rs 1,74,900, with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 16GB of unified memory, and 256GB of storage, according to Fact.net.in and other Indian reports. A higher configuration, with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, starts at Rs 1,99,900. Education pricing for the two configurations starts at Rs 1,68,900 and Rs 1,87,900 respectively.

Connectivity improves with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and faster SSD storage, according to CSR Journal. Those are not headline features, but they matter for a desktop that is expected to last for years. Wi-Fi 7 helps in busy homes and offices with many devices, and faster storage helps with large photo libraries, video projects, and everyday responsiveness.

India pricing, at a glance

Here are the starting prices reported for India, with education prices where they were published. Prices are for base configurations, and higher memory or storage will cost more. Always confirm the final price on Apple's India store before ordering, as configurations and offers can change.

ModelIndia starting priceEducation starting price
14-inch MacBook Pro with M6Rs 2,39,900Rs 2,27,900
24-inch iMac with M6, 10-core CPU / 10-core GPURs 1,74,900Rs 1,68,900
24-inch iMac with M6, 12-core CPU / 12-core GPURs 1,99,900Rs 1,87,900

For context, the touchscreen MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max start much higher in India: Rs 3,49,900 for the 14-inch M5 Pro, Rs 4,09,900 for the 16-inch M5 Pro, Rs 5,49,900 for the 14-inch M5 Max, and Rs 5,89,900 for the 16-inch M5 Max. The M6 MacBook Pro is therefore the cheapest entry into the current MacBook Pro line in India, by a margin of Rs 1,10,000 over the cheapest touchscreen model. That gap is not just about touch. It is about chip tier, display technology, and positioning. The M6 model is the standard professional laptop. The PROLED models are the premium, display-first professional laptops.

Pre-orders for the M6 MacBook Pro and M6 iMac opened on 28 October 2026 in India, with availability from 6 November 2026 through Apple's India online store, the Apple Store app, Apple Stores, and authorised resellers. If you are buying for a specific deadline, such as a school term or a work project, check delivery dates for your configuration, as popular configurations can slip.

M6 vs M5: what actually changes

The table below summarises the key differences between the new M6 MacBook Pro and the previous M5 MacBook Pro, based on Apple's announcement and detailed comparisons. All performance figures are Apple's claims, not independent tests.

What does M6 actually feel like in use? For most everyday tasks, the difference over M5 will be subtle. Both are fast, efficient, and quiet. The M6 advantage shows up in heavier, AI-assisted work, in larger local models, in image generation, and in tasks that benefit from more cores and more bandwidth. If you are already on an M5 MacBook Pro, and you are happy with it, M6 alone is not a compelling reason to upgrade. If you are on an M1, M2, or Intel Mac, M6 is a much larger jump, and the combination of chip, wireless, and battery makes it a sensible upgrade.

For the iMac, the jump is larger in relative terms, because the previous model used M4, not M5. Moving from M4 to M6 skips a generation, which means the performance and AI improvement should be more noticeable, especially for buyers who have held onto an older iMac for several years.

Verdict: a solid, unflashy upgrade

The M6 MacBook Pro and M6 iMac are not the most exciting Mac announcements of the year. They do not have a new design, a touchscreen, or an OLED display. What they do have is a genuinely new chip, better wireless, and familiar, proven designs, at prices that, in India, start at Rs 2,39,900 and Rs 1,74,900 respectively.

For most buyers, that combination is exactly right. You are not paying for a redesign you did not ask for. You are paying for more headroom, better AI performance, and a machine that should stay capable for years. If you need a laptop, buy the M6 MacBook Pro. If you need a desktop, buy the M6 iMac. If you need touch and OLED, look elsewhere in Apple's line, and be prepared to pay much more for it. That clarity, in a confusing launch week, is itself a kind of good news.
